How to Conduct a System Restore

1. Start with your desktop and click the Start menu in the bottom left hand side of your screen. You will be presented with a column of applications.

2. At the very bottom of that column, click All Programs and another column of options will be opened.

3. In that vertical menu, click Accessories and yet another column will appear to the right of that one.

4. Next, click System Tools which can be found in the newly opened column. One last column will appear and somewhere in that column you’ll find System Restore.

5. Click on System Restore and wait for the pop up that comes up telling you about System Restore and what it does. The title would be Restore system files and settings.

6. In the bottom right corner of the pop up, click Next to continue.

7. The next page that comes up should be a list of dates and times you can restore your computer to. Be sure to save any documents or pictures before you restore. Also, programs installed after the date you want to restore your computer to may very likely be uninstalled.

8. Choose a date and time from the given options in the chart shown. Then click Scan for Affected Programs right below the list of options. Another pop up will tell you which programs will be affected or uninstalled. When you’re done looking through those, close that pop up and click Ok to proceed with your system restore. The next page will ask you to confirm your restore point. Make sure at this point to save any work and close all programs.

9. When you’re ready, click Next. Beware that once you start a system restore, it cannot be reversed or stopped. You will lose everything new added into your computer between the time period of when you conduct the system restore to the system restore point. Yet another pop up will show on your screen warning you that there is no turning back and also asking for a last confirmation. Click Yes to proceed. Your computer will then restart and when that’s done, your computer will have been successfully restored to the settings of the restore point.

Congratulations! You will now have successfully conducted a system restore on your computer. (:

How to Transfer Files (songs) from iPod to Computer

Apple technology is one of the most advanced and sought after brand out there currently. However, a definite drawback is that it makes absolute sure that it's buyers don't violate copyright laws and so it guards the owner's purchases of songs, applications, pictures etc. extremely carefully. This is all great but what happens when the computer you have your iPod synced to crashes and there is no way to open iTunes? How can you sync your iPod to another computer without losing all the songs you have on it already? What if you have songs on one computer and more songs on another computer and you want to combine the two? Apple makes sure the songs on your iPod cannot be copied or transferred or moved anywhere other than the computer your iPod is synced to. Fortunately, there is a way to transfer your songs from any computer to your iPod and back. This tutorial will teach you just how to do it.

To start, first open up Internet Explorer either on your desktop or in the Start Menu.

Once you have a web browser open, type in the URL for Google, http://www.google.ca/ , in the address bar as shown.

When you arrive on Google's homepage, type Sharepod in the search bar.

Click the offical link to Getsharepod.com.

You will then have arrived on Sharepod's offical site. Click download, one of the tabs above.

You be transferred to another page which has the link for you to download the program. Click Download.

A pop up will appear asking if you would like to open or save the program. Click Open.

Wait while it loads.

Another window will appear. Here you will click the application "Sharepod" to launch the program.

Yet another window will ask you if you would like to extract all the files or run the program. Click Run.

If you happen to have iTunes running when you are downloading Sharepod, something will pop up telling you that iTunes is running at that time and that you should close it before continuing. It would be best to close iTunes before proceeding however, personally I find that it makes no difference.

Wait while Sharepod locates and retrieves all your songs from your iPod.

Select the song(s) you'd like to transfer from your iPod to your computer. Then click the icon in the top left corner that says Copy to PC.**

Something else will pop up asking you to confirm where you'd like to save the files you are copying. You can change this location according to your preferences.

Once the file is successfully copied into your computer, it will automatically copy it into iTunes also to save you the trouble. Click OK and now you can close the program.

As a final step, open iTunes, in either the Start menu or on your desktop.

Search for your song in your collection just to make sure it was successfully copied and transferred.

Congratulations! You have just successfully outsmarted Apple and transferred songs from your iPod to your computer. (:

**The other tabs have different icons where you can transfer things back into your iPod, back up your iPod and search your iPod.

Sploder Game - Peer Evaluation

This is a peer evaluation on Devni's sploder game.

Briefly describe the game, including its objectives. Devni's game is called Exploration Natsia 3. The difficulty level is 5 and the objective of the game is to find the escape pod.
List two strengths of the game. From what I saw when I played her game, there were strategic structures placed in order to challenge the player. She used a combination of the props provided to raise the difficulty instead of only the given enemies.
List one weakness of the game. One major weakness of her game was the number of ninjas in the beginning. At first I tried to fight them but after a while they kept coming and I just decided to jump over a crowd of them and after about three jumps I had arrived at the escape pod. Overall, it was a little too short and had way too many ninjas.
Answer the three questions provided by the game’s designer.
Devni has not posted any questions in her blog entry.

Figment of the Imagination - Self Evaluation

Describe your game (including a title). The name of the game I created is called "Figment of the Imagination". I chose this name because like the imagination, this game jumps around a lot and may get a little confusing. My game's setting is mostly situated in the air usually quite far from the ground. The player can reach these heights by using the outer walls created and hitting the outside walls surrounding the game area. With a variety of enemies, hazards and power-ups, this game will hopefully keep the player interested.
What is the objective of the game? The objective of this game is to kill as many of the monsters as you can and to collect the total two crystals.
Discuss two strengths and one weakness of your game. Two strengths of this game would be the outer wall that surrounds the perimeters of the game. Also, in this game, there are usually several ways to get to the same point in the game. So, if the player runs out of jet-pack fuel for example, they can climb up the wall instead. One weakness of this game would be that the player would jump around a lot. Therefore, it may cause confusion and frustration.
What improvements could be made? Some improvements that could have been made would include the lack of attention to the aesthetics of the game. I could have paid more attention to details and made the background and structures more visually appealing.
What difficulties did you encounter while creating your game? Some difficulties i encountered while making my game include not knowing where to start. The fact that I was to create a computer game by myself from scratch was a little overwhelming so I had trouble starting. However, once I got started, the rest came much easier. On the other hand, ending the video game was also a challenge. There are so many possibilities and I just wanted to add them all to my game.
What did you have to modify or change from the original design? What I decided to modify from my original plan was the underground portion of the game. I decided to leave that out altogether because in most of the other games I've tried out, they all involved an underground maze type of thing. I decided it was more original to focus on making my game above ground and higher.
Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your performance during this assignment. A strength on my performance for this assignment is that when I completed the first write up portion, my answers were fairly straight forward and I think they were a suitable length. A weakness would be my use of class time. I could definitely have done more in class to finish the assignment earlier.
What did you do well at? I think I did pretty well at trying to make my game as creative and original as possible.
What could you have done better at? The most important problem I had was time management. I think I was feeling lost after attempting to start making the game the first time and coming up with nothing. I should have finished when I started the first time.

At the end of your review, write three specific questions you would like a classmate to answer while reviewing your game.

- Was the length of the game too long or too short?
- Should there have been more of a plot or a theme?
- Should there have been more crystals to collect or less monsters to battle?

Investigate, Design & Plan

Investigate

What makes a “good” game enjoyable to play? A good game should be fun and creative without being too extensive or confusing. A good game shouldn’t be too hard and you should be able to get a bit farther each time you play it.
What makes a “bad” game not enjoyable to play? A bad game can be defined as either too hard or too easy. Also, if it’s in any way anticlimactic, the player would lose interest.

Design

What type of game are you going to produce? I’m going to produce a platform type game where the character will have to swim, jump and fight through different obstacles.
What will it look like? My game will vary from different levels as well as different elements that the character has to pass through in order to complete his mission.
How will the characters be controlled? The “left” and “right” arrows allow the character to move from side to side, the “up” key allows you to jump while the “down” arrow on the keyboard lets you duck. To attack, use the space bar and use “c” to activate any given jetpacks. You can also use “shift” to block and for a jumping flip in the air use a combination of “shift+up”.
What will be the objective of the game? The objective of this game is simple, to stay alive long enough to collect all the crystals.
How are you going to test its functionality? To test its functionality, I will conduct several experimental tests as well as ask my classmates to try it out and give feedback.
How will it be evaluated? It will be evaluated according to completion and attention to details. For example, if at some point it abruptly ends because the character falls down some hole and is unable to climb out, that would affect the quality of the game.
How long will you need to create it? Give a timeline for its completion. To completely finish this game, I should need about a week give or take a few days for design and time to change and re-do anything if new ideas come to mind.

Plan

What will you do first? Why? The first thing I’ll do is to try to come up with a design for my game. The different levels and areas that are more difficult than others to ensure the players don’t lose interest.
How will you insure that you complete the project on time? I will create a timeline and plan out what needs to be done when.
Who will test beta versions of your game? I will test beta versions of my game and I will most likely just pick one or two people to test it out as well to build upon it.
Will you incorporate other people’s suggestions into your game’s design? Depending on other people’s suggestions, I will change and re-create my game based on what they tell me.
How will you decide if you have created a good game or not? After I conduct several trials of the game, I will ask other people to try it out and give me feedback.

Soundtrack of My Life

  1. Alive by Melissa O'neil - This is the theme song for me and one of my best friends. This song is one of the rare songs that my friend actually knows the lyrics to and agrees to sing occasionally so it's pretty special.

  2. Change by Taylor Swift - "It's a sad picture, the final blow hits you. Somebody else gets what you wanted it can't end." These lyrics remind me of the time I wanted something really bad but in the end someone else came out on top. Listening to this song just makes me want to work harder for whatever it is I want and to never give up on believing.

  3. Crushed by Rosette - This song reminds me of my friend who moved schools. Everytime I hear this song now I think of all the stupid things we used to do.

  4. O Canada by various artists - This song reminds me of when I officially became a Canadian Citizen. It wasn't a very big deal to me at the time because I didn't understand, but now I do. It also reminds me of when I first came to Canada and they played the anthem in the morning at school and I was wondering why everyone was standing up.

  5. Pretend (Reprise) by Lights - "Wish I were a little girl without the weight of the world." I love this song because I can relate to the lyrics so well. I'm the kind of person who's constantly having flashbacks and being overwhelmed by the present and the lyrics in this song bring back so many memories but also at the same time help me move on so I can live in the moment.

  6. Low by Flo-Rida - Over year ago, me and four of my friends formed a dance group for the school talent show and discovered we actually had something going. Also, even though I had danced my whole life beforehand, this event helped me realize just how much I enjoy dance and this was the song that started it all.

  7. Tongue Tied by Faber Drive - This is the song me and my friends burst out singing randomly on the street. This is also probably the only song all of us really know so that makes it all the more special which is why I sometimes like to use it as an icebreaker. As soon as I sense some kind of tension, I start humming the tune and eventually we all burst into song. It's a pretty intense process to watch.

  8. Day After Tomorrow by Jason Zhang - This song is sung by one of my favorite Chinese artists. The song is so soothing that it's become my lullaby. Whenever counting sheep doesn't work out, all I have to do is play this song.

  9. You had a Bad Day by Daniel Powter - "Because you had a bad day, you're taking one down, you sing a sad song just to turn it around." I listen to this song when I have a bad day. It reminds me that I'm not the only one having a bad day and that there are probably people out there who have it worse and I just need to suck it up and get over it

  10. Keep Holding On by Avril Lavigne - This song has the most sentimental value to me because it was our Grade 6 graduation song. All of my experiences in elementary school, all my elementary schools are represented by this song.

Photo Story Autobiography

This is my Photo Story Autobiography. It is a collage of pictures of things that are important in my life.

  1. This is a picture of me and my closest friends. It was taken in Grade 6 when we went to camp as a school. My friends are the most important thing in my life next to my family. Even though two of them have moved away, we will always have this memory of some of the best times of our lives.
  2. This is my sister Lily. She was born on June 3, 2009. Besides the obvious reason that she’s my sister, she is also important to me because even from before she was born, she changed my life forever and will always remain a huge part of my life.
  3. This is the flag of China. I was born in China and came to Canada when I was five years old. Chinese culture has played a major role shaping my life and I am proud to call myself Chinese.
  4. This is a picture of my school, Acadia Junior High. I am a student here and I am in Grade 9. By going to school, I can get a higher education and then can create for myself a great future and make the time all my teachers spent on me worthwhile.
  5. This is an image of the license plate of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is important to me because of all the places I’ve moved to and from, it’s the place I remember the most of and also the place I miss the most. I’ve learned so much from the years I was in Nova Scotia and many of my most memorable childhood experiences have happened there.
  6. This picture is fairly self-explanatory, and if it’s not, it’s a book. I enjoy reading in my free time because while reading, I can escape my life and live in someone else’s for a little while. I love reading fiction because even though I know the story isn’t true, it’s fun to use my imagination.
  7. Dancing is important in my life because it’s good for my insane restlessness and also helps me express myself. I have been dancing ever since I was little in China but no, I am not the hard-core striving-to-be-the-best-dancer-in-the-world type. I dance just for the fun of it and that’s also why I’ve been dancing for so long.
  8. Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing piano when I was about 5 years old. I had to quit when I came to Canada and then took up violin in grade 1 and then piano again later on. Music is a huge part of my life and I can’t imagine my life without it.
  9. Not only is making music important in my life, I also listen to music made by other people. Faber Drive is my favorite band and have been my favorite band since their song “Tongue Tied”. The reason they are important to me is because of the lyrics of their songs are meaningful, their ability to actually sing and the fact that you can understand them not like other bands who just scream random words.
  10. I have a picture of a doctor in my autobiography because it shows my main goal in life. For a long time, I have aimed to go to medical school and become a doctor. This is partially because of the pressure my parents have put on me but also because I find medicine very fascinating.
